Sun. Wind. Rain.

The final Sailboat Race of the 2020 Commodore’s Cup Offshore Sailboat Racing Series, sponsored by the Halifax River Yacht Club took place on Sunday, 11 October.

The race was on the southern portion of the Near-Shore Sailboat Racing course, which was established this year to focus attention on the waterside of Daytona Beach by showcasing sailboats that are visible from the shore between Racing’s North Turn and the Daytona Beach Pier.

The race, which began with a pale blue sky and light breeze, ended with menacing dark clouds and rain squalls.

There were nine participants, six in the Cruising division and three in Performance. Sailboats in the Performance category have a spinnaker and several jibs that can be changed according to wind strength. A jib is a triangular sail that sets ahead of the foremast of a sailing vessel.

The winner in the Performance group for this race, and the overall Commodore’s Cup was Norm Church and Obsession. Phillip Cornett and Sailaway took first in the Cruising group, for this race and the overall series.

The 2021 Commodore’s Cup begins on Memorial Day Weekend with a distance race from Ponce Inlet to Charleston, SC. The first portion of the race, from Ponce Inlet to the Daytona Beach Pier will be the first Near-Shore race.
